NASCAR race driver Tony Stewart broke his silence and made his first public comment about Saturday’s tragic accident that claimed the life of young racer Kevin Ward Jr. at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Speedway.
He said
“There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr “It’s a very emotional time for all involved, and it is the reason I’ve decided not to participate in today’s race at Watkins Glen. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
During Saturday's race at the half-mile dirt track, Stewart caused 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. to spin out. That caused Ward to get out of his car to confront Stewart, but he was then struck by Stewart’s car.
Early Sunday morning, Sheriff Philip Povero confirmed that the driver was pronounced dead on arrival after being taken to a local hospital.
The Ontario Country (N.Y) Sheriff further said there are “no facts in hand” to support criminal intent from Tony Stewart as to whether he intentionally hit Ward or not.
